Laboratory introduction

Research summary

This laboratory carries out research into network technology (multimedia networks, network security and network applications) for the future information society. A particular focus is made on a wide-ranging view of computer virus studies at both the theoretical and practical levels. This includes the identification and elimination of unknown viruses and this work has won widespread renown at academic conferences leading to the grant of funds from the following organizations:

In the field of internet remote control systems work is being carried out from the level of local companies up to international conglomerates and in partnership with other universities. This led to establishment of an Iwate University venture company in April 2005.

Research style

Because network systems have become so large and the technology so advanced it has become difficult for individuals to make progress in this field. Hence in our laboratory we work on a project basis. This is a style of research that other large universities have been unable to undertake. The students are given their own tasks and work together towards one research goal. Results are announced at regular weekly meetings and the following week’s goals established and reported to the professor. This allows students to develop their skills naturally.

Target students

All companies now need network systems and this research laboratory provides the basis for those who want qualifications or to conduct research in this field. The graduates of this laboratory go on to work in the research departments of major companies like Canon, Dai Nippon Printing and Mitsubishi Electric as well as local companies like ICS. We welcome those looking to work towards masters and doctoral degrees in an environment that expects students to think for themselves rather than simply following the instructions of research assistants and senior students. The course focuses on advanced network systems and so we are looking for students with the following skills:

Laboratory Organization

The friendly laboratory staff consist of Professor Yuji Koi, Research assistant Naoshi Nakaya and Technical Assistant. Most undergraduate students go on to do graduate courses as can be seen from the numbers below:
